These are just the tip of the iceberg in the UK. As legal recruiters specialising in the smaller firm end, we estimate that almost every law firm in the UK has laid off at least one member of staff. We have already seen over 2,000 solicitors register with us since the credit crunch started, and when the property markets pick up here in the future, I expect the firms to suddenly have to go out and recruit property lawyers in large numbers, costing them a small fortune in advertising and recruitment costs. The problem is of course keeping them on when there is no work for them to do..

We get lawyers contacting us all the time about this, and it can often be said in the profession across the world that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

In house lawyers often want to get into private practice, and private practice lawyers want to get into in house teams.

Our usual advice is to dabble your toe in the water before you dive in, and go and get some experience if at all possible - you may be pleasantly surprised or similarly shocked by the work, and decide not to take it.

I have coached a number of lawyers who have made what they thought was their dream move, only to find that it wasnt and they are stuck..

Good luck!

Jonathan Fagan, MD, Ten-Percent Legal Recruitment Consultants, London United Kingdom.

I'd also like to add that Accenture is being very sneaky with these layoffs. Certainly 100s if not 1000s are being laid off, and it's not appearing on any of these layoff lists. I know new promotees that have been shown the door, so it is NOT limited to poor performers. All are at Risk.

Maybe someone should go and remind Accenture about their 2001 flex program. They've begun layoffs this months, and no Flex or Sabatical program exists. I'm guessing that it must not have worked out to great for ACN last time.

This is a great post. I'm surprised more people have not found your blog. Very informative and relevant posts for in-house counsel. My company has recently become a firm believer in human capital and has reacting accordingly to keep as many people as possible. As such, we are getting pay freezes instead. Keep up the good work!

Carl, unfortunately we have not come across many places that offer this type of information. I would recommend checking out the ALB Magazine - it provides legal news, events and developments in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, China. Hope that helps! Vanessa

Hi there

Good post.

I work in training here in the UK for the legal market (non-technical skills) and am planning a return trip to Asia this year with clients.

Can you point me in the direction of more information like this? There does not seem to be a great source of online knowledge.

Thanks in advance for your help.

email: carl@potentio.co.uk

I obtained my solicitors license with the QLTT but the Law Society practicing certificate is expensive to keep up. I have heard one can use the solicitor's license to motion into other jurisdictions like the British Virgin Islands that have very few ongoing requirements - any ideas on this?
